Prada introduces Re-Cashmere and Re-Wool, the next chapters in the Maison's push for circularity in fashion.

We’ll never pass up the opportunity to bring up The Neighbourhood around this time of year but it seems Prada’s beaten us to it.

Re-Cashmere and Re-Wool, Prada’s next chapter in circularity after Re-Nylon, introduces men’s and women’s sweaters for the former, and for the latter, trousers, jackets, skirts, and dresses for women. The sweaters of interest start at the moment of making, with spinning residues and offcuts, including those from Prada’s own Torgiano facility where knitwear prototypes take shape. Sorted by color from there, a step that spares the yarn from a trip to the dye bath, the cashmere then gets carded into fresh thread, all in Italy. The cashmere going in holds Sustainable Fibre Alliance Certification, and the yarn coming out earns the Global Recycled Standard (GRS).

Re-Wool takes a slightly different route in which defective wool and cashmere fabrics and cutting-room remainders from across the Prada Group’s lines go through color sorting and wet shredding, bypassing the dying process as well, before being turned into a filament from which carded spinning produces new yarn. The result of this process is no less gratifying, blending the recycled wool with a touch of cashmere – certified GRS – with Responsible Wool Standard virgin wool.

Just like the materials, the craftsmanship is also of high quality with everything made in Tuscany and Umbria. And with recycling in mind, the yarn dictates the quantities based on availability – a color that shows up one season, a particular blue, let’s say, may never return in exactly the same shade since each batch carries its own history.

In committing to circular and lower-impact solutions to fashion, Prada has also built a foundation of traceability so every piece in the collections carry an NFC tag that opens to the Auro Consortium platform. In one tap, the Maison maps the garment’s journey from fiber origin through each processing stage, and attaches a blockchain secured Digital Certificate of Authenticity.
