Bridging luxury fashion and ocean conservation, Prada campaigns Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND to protect our oceans

Prada has officially turned the tide on sustainable luxury with their latest Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND campaign featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Letitia Wright. The collaboration seamlessly merges fashion with a critical environmental message, raising awareness for ocean conservation.

In the campaign’s documentary, created by National Geographic CreativeWorks, Benedict invites us to explore the depths of the SEA BEYOND educational project which has reached over 35,000 students globally.

His voyage takes us to Japan’s Izu Peninsula, a region rich in marine biodiversity only two hours away from Tokyo. Here, he teams up with Elisabetta Zavoli, a photojournalist and SEA BEYOND ambassador, to discover the impact the project has had on the local environment, particularly that of the Sakana-kun Exploration Team.

At the heart of this initiative is the Re-Nylon collection, a pioneering achievement launched in 2019 that has since transformed the fashion landscape. Since July 2023, 1% of the proceeds from the Re-Nylon collection directly fund educational programs designed to enhance ocean literacy among young people.

Both Letitia and Benedict are dedicated philanthropists – Benedict aptly notes, “I think we’re at a crucial point where we have an opportunity to recalibrate our relationship with the ocean.” The sentiment speaks to the larger mission of this campaign: reconnecting humanity with the wonders of the sea.

The collection utilizes ECONYL®, a revolutionary nylon yarn created through an intricate de- and re-polymerization process. This method breathes new life in waste streams including material recovered from landfills, pollution from the ocean, and textile waste.

By breaking down these materials to their molecular level and reconstructing them into new, high-quality nylon, Prada reduces its reliance on virgin materials. This circular approach not only cleans up existing waste but also offers a sustainable alternative for luxury material sourcing, embodying a true paradigm shift in the industry.

The Re-Nylon collection itself showcases remarkable versatility in Prada’s iconic aesthetic. It encompasses both accessories and ready-to-wear pieces including the Re-Nylon rain jackets and foldable bucket hats.

Proudly donned by Letitia and Benedict in the campaign, backpacks are a core element of Prada’s accessory line. Reimagined in this regenerated material, they combine functionality with an eco-conscious ethos.

Even smaller items like the Mini Icon Re-Nylon keychain charm allow people to participate in this sustainable movement, making a statement of environmental responsibility.
