Premiering at Giornate degli Autor, “Avec Kim” pairs Suzanne Lindon with alt-culture icon Kim Gordon for a sensory ride through Paris.
Every festival cycle, the Venice Film Festival gets overtaken by red-carpet pageantry, but Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales consistently carves out one of the sharpest intersections of auteur cinema and contemporary fashion. Unveiled at Giornate degli Autori, the initiative’s 32nd commission brought French master Claire Denis to the Lido with Avec Kim, a sensory, wordless journey through the streets of Paris.
Avec Kim distills the core of Denis’s visual language, trading dialogue for the tactile “cinema of the body” that defined landmarks like Beau Travail (1999). Opening in a stark garage, Suzanne Lindon emerges from under an ’80s sedan, washes off the grease, steps into sharp dark leather, and heads across Paris to meet Kim Gordon. The Sonic Youth co-founder doubles as both star and composer, providing a moody, sprawling score.
Guided by presence rather than exposition, the narrative turns clothing and movement into character studies. As Denis noted, “capturing bodies on film is the only thing that interests me,” letting her camera serve as an intimate “choreographer by being close and respectful to the actors.”

The short plays as a Parisian road movie of magnetic gestures. As Denis noted, her film language is fundamentally “made out of tenderness and love of human beings even when they can be very brutal.” By contrasting Lindon’s dynamic youth against Gordon’s cultural stature, the film rethinks female tropes and the quiet power of companionship without forcing the issue.
16 years in, Miu Miu Women’s Tales continues to carve out a rare space dedicated entirely to stories made by women, for women.
