The rules are being thrown out of the window this season when it comes to creating fresh ICONs, as fashion reinvents the codes. Gucci has combined its Interlocking G and Horse-bit logos; Saint Laurent is re-writing timelessness with a modern language, while Louis Vuitton has reinvented its masculine leather goods with updated materials. The old has never seemed so new…
Dior’s Spring/Summer 2019 haute couture show was inspired by the magic of the circus, which is why it’s fitting that the creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri is bringing the spectacular show to Dubai, on March 18th. Chiuri was inspired by an enchanted world that included references from Cindy Sherman’s work focusing on clowns, the Victorian circus and Monsieur Dior’s own fascination with the circus back in the 1950s. The result? A fantastical creative chaos of whimsical, ballet-like dresses in powdery shades, tailoring reminiscent of lion tamers and horse riders and magical clown-like costumes all with the savoir-faire of the brand’s haute couture ateliers. Better still, Chuiri has designed some exclusive pieces just for the city, so one more reason to follow the parade this season.
While you may not be familiar with LA-based experimental musician, Zumi Roscow, you will have seen the bags she’s been named after – Gucci’s new Zumi collection. New for this season, the eclectic range of bags combines Gucci’s iconic Interlocking G and Horsebit logos in mixed metals on a range of styles and shapes to suit every occasion. The perfect embodiment of Alessandro Michele’s diverse vision of beauty, the Zumi comes in a top-handle version and a shoulder bag version, both of which come in a kitsch Gucci strawberry print, as well as a small tote size, with a shape inspired by a vintage Gucci bag from the 1960s. Just like the musician, the Zumi collection is full of free spirit with a wide range of materials, colors and textures. You just need to find the one that matches your own spirit.
THE NEW ICON
Named after the year Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé founded their couture house, the 61 bag, new for Spring/ Summer 2019’s, is the new icon to worship. With a clean, timeless silhouette and a vintage-inspired embossed YSL logo on the front, the sleek cross-body saddle bag is made in Italy, reflecting almost 60 years of the brand’s attention to craftsmanship, and is available in textured calf leather and in two sizes, small and medium. Throw on the medium bag with jeans, silk blouse and a blazer for everyday use, and downsize to the small when it comes to adding an ageless icon to your evening attire.
